Its never too late to start training Karate as we emphasise ‘Karate-do’ is about personal development & should be a way of life not just a combat sport. Join us at Huddersfield Combat Karate.

OSHI SHINOBU

(Push through & persevere)

This style was developed to combine the spiritual aspects of martial arts with practical self-defence capabilities, showcasing the effectiveness of its striking power in real combat situations. The Kakuto Karate philosophy of self-improvement and resilience pushes practitioners to their physical and mental limits, embodying the idea of finding “the ultimate truth” through martial arts training.

TRAINING NIGHTS

The average training night includes:

Fitness & Conditioning
Shadowboxing (Kūuchi)
Bagwork
Padwork with focus mitts or Thai pads
Bunkai (technique breakdown)
Jissen Kumite (MMA type sparring while standing & on the ground)

Kakuto Karate is a martial art that emphasises rigorous training, strict discipline, full-contact fighting, endurance and strength training. The Kakuto Karate philosophy of self-improvement and resilience pushes practitioners to their physical and mental limits, embodying the idea of finding “the ultimate truth” through martial arts training.

As well as striking techniques such as punches, elbows, headbuts, knees & kicks, Karate includes techniques like joint locks, throws, chokes & ground fighting. Collectively grappling is referred to as katame-waza.

Purpose of Grappling

In Karate, grappling is primarily used to:

  • Control the opponent: To prevent them from striking or continuing their attack.
  • Create space: To set up a strike or a throw.
  • Initiate a takedown: To transition to a ground-based defence.
  • Escape: To extricate oneself from a close-range grappling situation.

Styles and Variation

While many Karate styles emphasise striking, some incorporate more grappling elements, like Shito-Ryu. Kyokushin, for instance, is known for its full-contact sparring, but grappling techniques are generally less emphasised.

Historical Context

Karate’s grappling techniques have roots in Okinawan wrestling traditions like Tegumi and the term Torite, which takes its influence from Chinese Chin Na & Shuai Jiao (both forms of grappling).

Kumite and Sparring

Kumite, or sparring, is a significant part of Karate training and often includes grappling techniques, particularly in free sparring where takedowns and throws are permitted.

Competition

The SVT Knockdown Karate tournaments attended by Huddersfield Combat Karate and other competitions provide opportunities for practitioners to test their skills and push themselves in controlled environments. These experiences can be instrumental in developing mental resilience and learning from successes and failures.
