SANSHOU COMBAT ARTS
Mind, Body, Spirit
At its core, this system is about more than fighting. Fighting is the practice; cultivation is the purpose.
Martial arts develop mind, body, and spirit through discipline, balance, and self-awareness.
THE MIND (心 Xīn) — Sharpened through strategy, focus, and composure under pressure. Learn to remain calm, adapt, and respond rather than react.
THE BODY (身 Shēn) — Strengthened through conditioning, sparring, and technical mastery. Develop power through relaxation, timing, balance, and efficiency, rather than brute force.
THE SPIRIT (灵 Líng) — Cultivated through respect, perseverance, humility, courage, and self-control. True strength is the ability to control yourself, not simply overcome others.
The Dao of Fighting
- Learn to balance hardness and softness, movement and stillness, action and restraint. Know when to advance, retreat, strike, yield, or remain still.
- Through practice, technique becomes instinct and force becomes flow.
- The ultimate goal is mastery of oneself.
- Train the body. Discipline the mind. Cultivate the spirit. Seek balance.
SANSHOU COMBAT ARTS
THe 5 wayS of attack
The Five Ways of Attack are a core strategic framework in Jeet Kune Do, teaching adaptability, timing, and efficiency in combat.
- Single Direct Attack (SDA)
One fast, decisive strike delivered with simplicity and precision. - Attack by Combination (ABC)
Rapid combinations used to overwhelm an opponent and create openings. - Progressive Indirect Attack (PIA)
Feints and misleading movements used to manipulate reactions before striking. - Hand Immobilisation Attack (HIA)
Uses trapping and limb control, influenced by Wing Chun, to create openings. - Attack by Drawing (ABD)
Provokes an opponent to attack, creating the opportunity for a well-timed counter.
Together, these methods develop strategic thinking, adaptability, timing, and efficient application in combat.

SANSHOU COMBAT ARTS
The History of Sanshou
Sanshou, also known as Sanda, has its roots in China’s long tradition of leitai (擂台) fighting, in which martial artists tested their skills in open-platform combat. These contests helped develop practical fighting methods combining striking, throws and takedowns. The modern conception of Sanshou emerged in 1979, when Chinese martial arts authorities began developing a standardised combat sport that could bring together the practical fighting techniques found across traditional Wushu. Sanshou combined the traditional Chinese striking, kicking, throwing and wrestling (Shuai Jiao) methods of Wushu with elements of Western boxing, while also drawing influence from Muay Thai and Japanese martial arts. Over time, these influences were adapted into a distinctive Chinese combat system emphasising fast combinations, powerful kicks, sweeps, throws and dynamic movement. Today, Sanshou/Sanda represents the modern competitive expression of Chinese martial arts while retaining a connection to the older tradition of practical fighting on the leitai.
SANSHOU COMBAT ARTS
MORE THAN A COMBAT SPORT
Sanshou Combat Arts is more than a combat sport — it’s a lifestyle that develops physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth. Open to all ages and abilities, it promotes confidence, discipline, healthy living, and the pursuit of continual self-improvement, both inside and outside the gym.
Training also builds strong friendships and a supportive community founded on respect, teamwork, and shared goals. Students develop humility, self-control, and accountability while learning to respect others and uphold positive values, creating an environment where everyone can grow together.
As practitioners age, the focus naturally shifts from competition to health, longevity, and practical self-defence. Regular training improves strength, mobility, balance, and wellbeing, helping people stay active, independent, and capable throughout every stage of life.
